A Love Story In Retrospect, Part IV: The One With A Million Photos, And Also Lots Of Xanax
First we met. Then we dated. There was a proposal. And now we come to the wedding.
So here we are on October 12, 2008. Its a gorgeous autumn day. The skies are clear. The air is crisp. The bride is on more xanax than medically recommended. Perfection.
Here’s the thing? I am a pretty high strung individual. Like, you would never meet someone who knows me and hear them describe me as “laid back.” That’s just not my style. My style is intense worry, followed by anxiety, followed by full blown panic. So why was I so nervous on my wedding day? I can assure you it had nothing to do with Ben, rather it was the most intense stage fright ever. The following was running through my head in a loop:
Everyone will be looking at me. Holy shit, what if I fall. Oh my God, I am totally going to fall now that I thought that. And everyone will see it. WHY DID WE INVITE PEOPLE TO THIS WEDDING?! I’m going to throw up. I wonder if its in poor taste to walk down the aisle with an air sick bag. Dear Jesus, everyone is going to see me throw up. Could I be any more embarrassing? Why do people even talk to me? NERVOUS BREAKDOWN!
It was some scary and intense shit. I’m getting off track though, I just wanted to give you an idea as to what my frame of mind was like at the time.
So the morning begins, and Evan (Maid of Honor) and I start the morning in our hotel room by watching a Cheetah Girl’s movie on the Disney channel. And trying not to throw up. I did my own hair and makeup, so we had no salon appointments, just an easy morning. So we watched some awful movies, tried to eat something, focused on not passing out.
I finish doing my hair and makeup, and then its time to get into the dress. Hyperventilation commences. I get the dress on and my mom says, “”Its time to go to the venue.” Holy Mother of Jesus. So, we leave the hotel and head over to the venue.
Notice the look of abject fear on my face.
We get to the venue and I am sequestered in the bridal suite until the ceremony begins. I’m praying to Jesus like its the frigging apocalypse. This is my pious face.
Hi God? Its me, Jillian. Sorry about all the sinning, please help me to not throw up on my wedding dress. Amen.
The Day of Coordinator comes into the bridal suit and informs me, “The ceremony is about to begin, we’re ready for you.” HOLY.MOTHER.OF.JESUS.
Coming down the stairs. Right before I said to the Day of Coordinator, “Can you get me a chair at the end of the aisle? I’m like 99% sure I’m going to pass out.” He’s like, “Seriously?” To which I respond, “Rick, get me a motherfucking chair.”
And now its time to walk down the aisle. And the praying? Its become more fervent.
Guess what I just said to my parents? “If you fucking let go of me when we get to the end of that aisle, so help me Jesus I will fucking kill you.” Oh, the memories!
And then, hey guess what? I totally got to the end of the aisle. And my parents? They totally let me go. Bitches! At this point I am suffering from the most intense stage fright ever. I am seriously considering if it would be rude to ask all of our guests to turn around so that they’re not looking at me. But then I thought better of it, and instead yelled at the officiant.
“Alan, I’m going to need you to skip right to the vows.” Alan keeps talking. “Alan, I am very serious. There’s a pretty solid chance I’m going to pass out and I’d like to say my vows before that happens.” Alan looks scared, can’t tell if I’m joking. “Alan, go.to.the.vows.” Now everyone is frightened.
And then we said our vows. And I have to tell you, something happened. (This is the part where I make you throw up with all of my saccharine love shit) As soon as I started saying my vows to Ben I felt a calm that I had never felt before. I felt so sure, so right, everything was just so right. All of a sudden, I wanted the ceremony to go on forever. It was the single greatest moment of my entire life.
And then we kissed. And it was perfect.
And holy shit it was over! And it was time for champagne! While drinking, our photographers tried to get some formal photos. It was a bit like herding cats. Want to see some of the results? I’ll assume you said yes. Because I’m a narcissist like that.
Very relaxed due to xanax, alcohol, and the realization that I made it through the ceremony without vomiting.
Buzz is wearing off, where is my drink?
No, really, I’m essentially sober now.
Awww, but now we’re kissing, so I’m cool with being all sober and shit.
Shit! Its a ghost! Watch out Ben! She’s coming to get you and chain you to the radiator!
Looking a little glassey eyed here. Someone must have gotten me that drink. Is gotten even a word? I don’t have time to think about that now, as I am married and have wifely shit to do.
The combination of champagne and wedding vows led us to believe we were super heroes. Shortly after this photo was taken we attempted to jump off the roof and fly. It didn’t end well.
And then it was time for the reception, which was basically code for drunken dancing, excessive kissing and repeated screaming of, “Holy shit! We’re married!” It looked something like this.
Dancing. Like uncoordinated white people. Because that’s what we are.
Much better at kissing than we are at dancing.
Further evidence that we do in fact like each other.
God, I love him. I’ve got nothing else.
My signature move? The guns.
Christ, we dance much better after several drinks. I am way more coordinated when drunk.
And they lived happily ever after.
